Every term, honestly defined
CoffeeGlossary began with a barista trainer's frustration: the coffee world runs on jargon that half its own speakers use incorrectly. 'Extraction,' 'body,' 'honey process,' 'third wave' — each term quoted, few defined, and almost nowhere a plain-English definition you could trust. We built the reference the industry owed its newcomers: a glossary where every entry is written to be understood, checked by people who work with coffee for a living.
What the site covers
Our entries span the full territory of coffee knowledge:
- Brewing science: extraction yields, ratios, grind geometry, water chemistry, and the vocabulary of the methods that use them.
- Green coffee and processing: varieties, origins, drying and fermentation terms, grading, and what the bag's label actually claims.
- Espresso and bar practice: the technical language of the machine, the shot, and the milk, defined the way a trainer would explain them.
- Café operations: the business terms behind the counter — wholesale, licensing, costing — for people opening shops, not just pulling shots.
Our editorial standard
Entries are written by credentialed coffee professionals and reviewed by an editorial board of industry veterans. Where the industry disagrees with itself — and it does — we say so and lay out the positions rather than crowning one. Terms are defined in plain language first, technical depth second, because a glossary that only experts can read has failed at its one job.
Whether you are studying for a certification, training staff, or simply trying to understand what your grinder's manual is talking about, CoffeeGlossary keeps every term of the coffee world within reach — clearly defined, honestly sourced, and free to read.
